“A beautiful sanctuary where you can get up close and personal with the rescued animals. The reserve is stunning with an abundance of African wildlife and the adventure just gets better with each day. There is some hard work to be done but it is rewarding, exciting and so enjoyable. It is run by a friendly, knowledgeable and inclusive team who are keen to get you involved in everything." Claire
If you’ve been searching for that authentic wildlife conservation volunteer experience which doesn’t feel like it’s only for young students and gap year travellers and which offers a more comfortable standard of accommodation, then SanWild could well be the one for you.
SanWild is a 3,000-hectare (7,500-acre) protected reserve in the South African savannah, a place where endangered wildlife can roam free. Recognised for its role in ethical wildlife conservation, SanWild is a wildlife rehabilitation center and protected reserve together in a single location, providing a safe refuge for injured and recovering animals.
Activities are planned, but conservation work is not always predictable, because priorities and animal needs change frequently. There are activities that need to happen every week: caring for and feeding animals in rehabilitation, feeding and monitoring the predators in our permanent enclosures, checking fences and security cameras, tracking the rhinos and cheetahs, reserve maintenance, habitat work and the normal day-to-day running of the sanctuary.
Then there are the occasions nobody can plan for. An injured animal may need help, a fence may be damaged, wildlife may need to be located, a veterinarian may need to come in, an animal may need to be relocated, or something completely unexpected may happen in the bush. That unpredictability is really part of the adventure at SanWild. We don't manufacture wildlife experiences for volunteers - particpants are involved in whatever the sanctuary genuinely needs at the time. Participants have been involved in placing radio collars on elephant, de-horning rhino, removing snares, lion dental treatments, joining patrols and learning about anti-poaching measures …… what adventures will your stay bring?
