Itinerary

Day 1 (Monday)  Arrival day.  Arrive into Hoedspruit Airport and transfer to the sanctuary, a journey of approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival, you will receive an induction on all health and safety measures.

Project life Our day starts early as we head out on a morning drive through the reserve, this is the very best time of day to view wildlife in action. We return to the lodge around 0800 for breakfast and preparation for the day ahead – generally we’ll have a 3 hours task in the morning, 2-3 hours in the afternoon with a long, lazy lunch in the middle of the day. We will always make time for sunset, then it’s dinner back at the lodge followed by a relaxed evening with fellow volunteers.

The reality: there is no typical day. Activities are planned, but conservation work is not always predictable and priorities and animal needs change frequently. You will help feed the animals, clear and clean enclosures.  You will be involved in monitoring certain animals,  maintenance work such as mending fences, clearing vegetation and habitat restoration or supporting other conservation tasks. If animal rescues or veterinarian interventions are necessary, volunteers take part, but these occurrences are of course unplanned.

About the Project

Accommodation  SanWild Lodge sits within the reserve itself, overlooking a water hole often visited by wildlife, from birds to elephants. Participants have access to shared lodge facilities, including a lounge, bar, dining area, lapa (fire pit), swimming pool, and wooden deck. Wi-Fi is provided. The setting is quiet and immersive - shaped by the rhythms of the bush and designed to support life on the reserve rather than distract from it.

Accommodation is provided in two-bedded safari tents with en-suite bathrooms (pictured below). Tents are allocated on a same-sex, twin-share basis unless travelling as a couple.  Laundry service is provided 3 times per week. Housekeeping service visits daily.

For more privacy and comfort, a Deluxe safari tent upgrade is available for an additional fee. Deluxe tents offer a large private seating area and an open-plan bathroom. These are also available for guests who prefer single occupancy. Availability is limited.
