The Zambia Wildlife Capture Experience is a unique opportunity for veterinary students and vet nurses to get hands-on experience in wildlife veterinary work and to be part of the white rhino immobilisation team. During this 10 day experience, participants will gain technical knowledge and skills through theoretical lectures and hands-on field work in small groups of maximum 10.
This program is suitable for veterinary and vet nursing students as well as for those already qualified with a special interest in wildlife veterinary work.
The aim of the Zambia Wildlife Capture Experience is to expose participants to the behind-the-scenes of wildlife veterinary work and wildlife conservation, learning about immobilisation (darting) and other capture techniques in a variety of wildlife species and to give participants the opportunity to work alongside wildlife vets and conservationists during the immobilisation of the endangered white rhino.
Participants will gain technical skills and knowledge through daily hands-on field work and theoretical lectures. The lectures will cover important topics related to wildlife immobilisation and capture, to name a few: applied pharmacology of different immobilising drugs, species-specific immobilisation and vital monitoring during anaesthetic, principles of darting and safety procedures, stress and capture-related mortality and how to prevent this.
